After an eternity in development, Duke Nukem Forever is finally going to be released on May 3, 2011 in North America, developer Gearbox has revealed to Game Informer.

The long-awaited macho shooter will hit PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The worldwide release is slated for May 6. It definitely is. Honestly, they mean it this time.

"The moment fans all over the world have been waiting for is almost here," said Christoph Hartmann, president of publisher 2K. "May 3, 2011 marks Duke's return as he unleashes his brash and brutally honest wit on the world. His return is going to be epic and one that will make video gaming history!"

Duke Nukem Forever's had an infamously long and troubled development since being announced in 1997 by original developer and series creator 3D Realms, switching engines several times and being delayed often. Duke almost never made it, after 3DR suffered legal troubles with 2K and massive layoffs. However, development continued at a small studio of DNF vets and, after the legal matters were settled, Gearbox stepped in to carry the game to completion.

The game was unveiled for the umpteenth time at PAX 2010, where we got to play it and chat with Gearbox marketing VP--and Shacknews founder--Steve Gibson.

Early access to a DNF demo has been promised to those who bought the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition, though those who bought the original version of Gearbox's shooter RPG on Steam before October 12, 2010 have also got into the 'Duke Nukem Forever First Access Club.'

May 3 in North America and May 6 worldwide. PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Gearbox and 2K really do seem convinced it'll happen. "Always bet on Duke," the saying goes.

PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

That alone would indicate, to me anyway, that what we'll end up with is a mediocre console port at best. However 2k and gearbox both have thier roots in PC gaming and off the top of my head i cant say i've play a bad game from them, granted none of thier titles are genre breaking and at best are above average, so at worst i think this will be fairly entertaining and sit aside the likes of bioshock( which as some will know i dont rate too highly )

I will probably end up trying this out one way or another if only out of curiosity to see what they've done with the license and how true to the Duke they've stayed.

Duke Nukem Forever: Balls of Steel edition includes one foot tall bust of Duke Nukem

How much do love the Duke? Enough to buy a one foot tall bust bust of the man? In that case, the Duke Nukem Forever Balls of Steel edition is just for you. This special edition of Duke Nukem Forever also comes with a hardcover art book, a collectible comic book, poker chips and more.

A price for the pack is yet to be announced, but it will contain the following:

* Collectible bust of the greatest alien ass-kicker of all-time
* Numbered, limited-edition certificate of authenticity
* 100-page hard cover book: The History, Legacy & Legend of Duke Nukem Forever Art from the Vault
* Duke Nukem Forever postcard series
* Duke Nukem Forever radioactive emblem sticker
* Duke Nukem Forever collectable comic book
* Duke Nukem Forever foldable paper craft
* Duke Nukem Forever poker chips
* Duke Nukem Forever mini-card deck
* Duke Nukem Forever radioactive emblem dice

Duke Nukem is due out on May 1. Check out the latest screens HERE, and head over to the official Duke Nukem Forever site for more information.

The Balls of Steel edition looks good, but not as good as the mysterious Duke Nukem package PC Gamer received recently. We were convinced the black box was some sort of weapon, but it turned out to contain a full sized ham, a huge cigar, a bottle of bourbon and a copy of Guns and Ammo. All items have since been dealt with.
