blacklight retribution

Has gone into open beta. Looks ok but its buggy as hell with a boat load of people having problems getting the game to run reliably. Still looks like it could be worth a look ( though it is one of these FtP titles which are all the rage).

i have the 1st one on steam, crap multi.

Will have a look into this, never heard of it before.

From what little i've played ( yet to get to play a full map bar the tutorial) it look like a standard run n gun affair. Enclosed maps with a similar feel to the F.E.A.R games and a credit and 'zen' ( real cash) unlock system.

Real cash unlocks just kind of put a dampner on it for me, I hate games that you need to pay into again after purchase just to keep a competitive edge over other players.

Don't disagree and from what little i can see alot of those unlocks are time based ( you basicly rent the item for a few days) which really puts the boot in. You may beable to buy thing permanently but i really havent bothered looking into it too much as atm i have no intention of playing it when it goes live.

Pretty much. At least with tribes you can unlock via xp earned by playing and the starter classes have the tools to take on anything.

So its not even permant unlocks Kryp, I am starting to smell a money grab which in all honesty many of these supposedly free to play games end up being.

As far as blacklight goes, there seems to be alot of time rented gear as opposed to tribes which is all permanent. I cant really compare beyond that as i've never been able to complete a map in blacklight( which would give me credits to spend and lvl to unlck more options i think).

So you have option to earn currency in the game, that changes it slightly but still gives the 'zen' players the upper hand.

And gamers love having the upper hand, will be giving this one a miss and in closing agree with my colleague Kryp in saying that permant XP based systems are the preferred option for me too.
